The Tables Are Turning

It seems like average Americans aren’t in a compliant mood. And no, I’m not going to bring up yesterday’s elections (other than to say I won’t bring them up).

I wrote about the John Deere strike before. It’s not like I forgot about it. Yet somehow, in my every-day hustle and bustle, I didn’t realize it’s been over two weeks that 10,000 of those employees have been absent from work.

Moreover, the United Auto Workers union just rejected a new perks-filled deal that includes 10% pay increases.

Honestly, I’m not sure what else its members are looking for. They could have legitimate concerns or the UAW could be pushing unreasonable expectations.

Nobody’s telling us any details. All we know is the strike will go on.

There’s also the American Airlines (AAL) situation to talk about. While it seemed as if its awful itinerary issues were over…

They’re not. Not even close.

This past Friday, it had to cancel 376 flights, 551 on Saturday, and 480 on Sunday – all of which it’s blaming on staffing issues and bad weather.

The “bad weather” bit is a little too reminiscent of Southwest’s (LUV) excuse last month under similar circumstances. So I’m guessing it’s much more about employee preferences and convictions than literal storm clouds.

Again, employees just aren’t feeling compliant these days.

That may not surprise some of you. But I think this next bit will: Almighty digital real estate company Zillow (Z) reported a $0.95 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) loss for Q3. And revenue missed at $1.74 billion vs the $2.01 expected.

Now it’s saying it will eliminate its home-flipping business altogether. CEO Rich Barton admitted, “We’ve determined the unpredictability in forecasting home prices far exceeds what we anticipated.”

In other words, arrogance doesn’t pay.

The World According to REITs

One more thing to mention before we get to real estate investment trust (REIT) quarterly earnings… U.S. corporate stock buybacks are on a chart-topping roll. To quote Fox Business:

“S&P 500 companies in recent weeks have disclosed buybacks totaling $145 billion for the third quarter. And the total is likely to surpass $224 billion by the time all reports are in, Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices, said on Tuesday.
“That would be above the $223 billion in buybacks recorded in the fourth quarter of 2018, which was a record, he said.”

There are definitely REITs following in that trend. I just haven’t had the chance to note them here considering everything else involved in earnings season.

In the past 24 hours, Community Healthcare Trust (CHCT), City Office REIT (CIO), Douglas Emmett (DEI)…

JBG Smith (JBGS), Lamar Advertising (LAMR), Life Storage (LSI),

Macerich (MAC), National Storage Affiliates Trust (NSA), Healthpeak Properties (PEAK), and Spirit Realty Capital (SRC) all reported.

Here’s your four for here (with three more available at Intelligent REIT Daily!):

City Office announced core funds from operations (FFO) of $0.32 for the quarter. There were some losses involved in its statement – enough so for it to lower its full-year guidance from $1.40-$1.43 to $1.29-$1.32. Same-store cash net operation income (NOI) did increase 1.4% year-over-year, and its occupancy rate came in at 88.7%.
Lamar raised its full-year FFO guidance from $6.10-$6.30 per share to $6.35-$6.50 after reporting adjusted FFO (AFFO) of $1.90. Net revenue rose 23.5% in the quarter. Free cash flow jumped 36.6%. And adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) did even better at 48.4%
Life Storage recorded $1.37 in per-share FFO and raised its 2021 guidance from $4.69-$4.79 to $4.92-$4.96. That’s justified by its same-store revenue jumping 17.4% and same-store NOI climbing 24.3% over Q3-20. During the three-month period, Life Storage purchased 29 stores for $336 million.
Macerich saw FFO of $0.45 per share and even managed to raise its guidance from $1.79-$1.94 to $1.92-$2.00. Same-center NOI with lease termination income included increased 21.4% year-over-year. Without it, it was 20.6%. And portfolio occupancy was 90.3%, a 90 basis-point boost to Q2’s results.
