The Fed Offers Us “Answers”

We do have an interesting Federal Reserve on our hands these days.

I won’t say it’s one that’s set on obfuscation. I’ll only reiterate that it’s interesting.

Nor am I the only one who thinks so, considering this morning’s commentary about the Fed’s meeting that “concluded” the other day. The markets have been waiting for something definitive from the organization, and we did get some of that.

But we also got this, as detailed by Yahoo Finance:

“Asked Wednesday during a press conference about whether the Fed discussed plans to begin slowing down its pace of asset purchases, [Federal Reserve Chair Jerome] Powell confirmed that… the central bank began ‘talking about talking about’ changing this program.
“I expect we’ll be able to say more about the timing [of tapering asset purchases] as we see more data,’ Powell said Wednesday. ‘There’s not a lot more light I can shed on that. But you can think about this meeting as the talking about talking about meeting if you like. And I now suggest that we retire that term, which has served its purpose well.”

It goes on from there:

“For months now, Powell and other Fed officials have reiterated that they both were not ‘talking about talking about’ tapering asset purchases – which are still running at $120 billion per month, according to the Fed’s statement on Wednesday – nor were they ‘thinking about thinking about’ raising interest rates. But now that the talk about tapering asset purchases has begun, chatter about quantitative easing (QE) among the media and Wall Street Fed watchers can shift from words to deeds.”

Or can it? Did we actually learn anything new from those comments?

The way I see it, any answers to those questions are unclear. Which, I expect, is precisely what Powell intended.

The World According to REITs

What we do know is that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates near zero for now. And that its official stance on inflation concerns is essentially “Eh. No big deal.” The only reason it’s spiked now is because of “transitory factors” such as temporary supply shortages and hiring issues.

I’m not sure I agree with that though. Neither do a growing number of other analysts, investors, and consumers alike.

Which brings us to our often inflation-fighting real estate investment trusts (REITs). Here’s the much more clear directions they’ve been taking and making since yesterday’s post:

Kilroy Realty (KRC) reached agreements to purchase Indeed Tower in Austin, Texas; a plot of land in San Diego; and the ground lease under its Key Center office tower in Bellevue, Washington, for a total of $670 million.
Extended Stay America (formerly STAY) is now officially acquired by Blackstone Real Estate Partners and Starwood Capital Group. Common stockholders on record as of June 15 have been paid their promised special cash dividend of $1.75 per share. And the company is now off the market and privately operated.
Apollo Commercial Real Estate Finance (ARI) upsized a private offering from $400 million to $500 million worth of 4.625% senior secured notes maturing 2029. The sale should be completed at the end of the month.

Oh yeah, and The GEO Group (GEO) is at the top of yesterday’s highest movers.
