Which headlines caught my attention this Monday morning?

Well, the one about American Airlines (AAL) canceling several hundred flights over the weekend. Part of that was due to weather apparently, but perhaps the largest factor was staffing shortages.

It just didn’t have the pilots to fly the planes.

Even after reading over the Fox Business article in question, I must admit that I don’t quite understand the issue. After all, why would they schedule the flights in the first place if they didn’t have the personnel available?

I’m sure there is a reason. But don’t ask me what.

I’m also very happy in that case that I’m not flying American. Because, as I said in Friday’s blog, I’m off to the Big Apple today! That city-specific real estate investment trust (REIT) conference was too tempting not to take up.

I’ve flown once or twice in the last six months now. For business purposes too, just more administrative efforts. Essentially, I was taking care of in-house – though out-of-state – tasks on my to-do list.

This trip, however, will be the first time in over a year and a half where I’m interacting with more than just a recording crew or some such group. To me at least, it’s a pretty big deal and I can’t wait to share what I find with you!

Warning though: This week’s blog posts might be brief considering my schedule. In the meantime, here’s the other information I’d like to share: Morgan Stanley (MS) CEO James Gorman recently told employees:

“If you can go to a restaurant in New York City, you can come into the office. And we want you in the office.”

This brings me directly to REITs.

The World According to REITs

Last November, I interviewed Empire State Realty Trust (ESRT) CFO Christina Chui, who said:

“… the world is on pause. There isn’t a lot of new business deals getting done. And when you have that environment, there’s no rush to get back to the office.

“You don’t have the competitive juices among companies saying, ‘I need to close on that deal and get my people together.’ They’re really not missing out on that much. So it’s easy to say Zoom suffices. Teams suffices… it’s great we have all these technological enhancements. It’s great that flexibility has been introduced. But when competitive spirits come, people want to collaborate, get things done, move ahead. Things will come back, so we feel confident about that.”

I know there are companies saying otherwise even today. But it’s also clear there will be REITs that survive the changed and changing environment – even in the office space.

Can the same be said about a certain mall REIT? I won’t say one way or the other, though I will share its recent news:

Washington Prime Group (WPG) signed an agreement with Synergy & Mills Development to create new commercial office space at its Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek, Ohio – an already mixed-use space.
Condor Hospitality Trust (CDOR) says its board is evaluating ways to enhance shareholder value, including by hiring Hodges Ward Elliott to help sell its 15 hotels.
Public Storage (PSA) will redeem the entirety of its $325 million 4.95% cumulative preferred series D shares on July 20 at $25 each.
