If Cathie Wood Is Out of China…

Unlike my colleague, Dividend Sensei, I don’t really pay much attention to Cathie Wood.

The ARK Investment Manager founder and CEO might make the news a lot with her ETFs. But her high-risk, high-reward style is so very far removed from my methodology that it doesn’t seem worth commenting on.

As a general rule, anyway. But other than that and the pieces I coproduce with Dividend Sensei, I just don’t pay ARK that much mind.

I’m going to make an exception this morning though. Because, to quote Bloomberg:

“… Ark Investment Management has been selling Chinese tech stocks, with holdings in one of the firm’s funds falling to the lowest on record as Beijing’s crackdown on the sector intensifies.
“China’s weighting in Wood’s flagship ARK Innovative ETF has plunged to less than 1% from 8% as recently as February, while that of the Ark Next Generation Internet ETF has fallen to 5.4%, the lowest compared to month-end figures since Bloomberg began compiling the data in October 2014. The China weighting in Ark’s fintech ETF has remained steady at around 18%.”

In my assessment, Wood is one of the least risk-adverse big names in the financial industry. She’s all about going for the gold at potential ultimate prices I’m just not willing to pay.

So if she’s growing more cautious about something as big as China, I’m going to pay attention.

China affects almost everything these days. You know how it used to be, “If the U.S. sneezes, the world catches a cold?”

Well, there’s another set of sniffles we have to worry about now, making me even more certain I want to be in defensive positions going forward.

The World According to REITs

Here’s another reason why I’m just as focused as ever on dividend-paying stocks like real estate investment trusts (REITs)…

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation numbers were released yesterday. And despite all the talk earlier this week about inflation calming down, they were actually worse than expected.

The experts anticipated it would rise 4.9% over the last year. Instead, the CPI climbed 5.4%.

That’s 0.9% higher than last month – both including and excluding gas and food categories – something we haven’t seen since 2008. So when I have a set of stocks spread out before me that pay dividends and cover significant inflation considerations…

You’d better believe I’ll continue investing in REITs – with proper focus on valuation, of course. So with that qualifier officially established, here’s the latest sector-specific news to share:

Sunstone Hotel Investors (SHO) says it will redeem all 3 million outstanding shares of its 6.450% series F cumulative redeemable preferred stock on August 12. It also priced an underwritten offering of 4 million shares of its 5.70% series I cumulative redeemable preferred stock to raise $100 million.
EPR Properties (EPR) will resume its monthly cash dividend of $0.25, saying, “We are pleased that we continue to show meaningful progress in our property openings and cash collections…”
RMR Mortgage Trust (RMRM) closed a $27.4 million first mortgage floating-rate bridge loan. That’s to finance its five-story 500 N. Central Expressway, a multi-tenant office property in Plano, Texas.

And finally, I’m not sure if there’s much more to do about Ashford Hospitality Trust (AHT) for the time being than sigh.

Perhaps very, very loudly.
