How Hard Is It to Spend $1 Trillion?

I have an associate, Bryan Kuderna, author of Millenial Millionaire. He runs The Kuderna Podcast, which he describes as pursuing “wealth in its original meaning – a state of well being!” and writes articles too, many of which he’ll give me first looks at.

Since this was one of those times, I can’t even give you the link to the following quotes that are so important to share:

“If you happened to catch the latest episode of my podcast, The Kuderna Podcast, in which I interviewed economist, Dr. Donald Vandegrift, you likely have debt and inflation fresh on your mind. The Biden administration just invigorated this already popular debate with the passing of The American Rescue Plan on March 11. This will be the third massive round of stimulus in less than one year.
“To set the stage for what can easily become an overwhelming deluge of figures, take a practical look at things. A trillion dollars may seem to be a casual figure; so how hard is it to actually spend $1 trillion? If you spent one dollar every second, you would have spent $1 million in [12] days. At the same rate, it would take 32 years to spend $1 billion. However, $1 trillion? That would take over 31,000 years.”

But that’s if YOU spent that kind of money. When the U.S. government is involved, you’d better believe it will find ways to spend it a lot faster than that. In fact, a large chunk of it is already being doled out.

Yesterday, Yahoo News reported that:

“The third round of stimulus checks will start hitting bank accounts for eligible Americans as soon as this weekend, the IRS said late Friday.
“‘Following approval of the American Rescue Plan Act, the first batch of payments will be sent by direct deposit, which some recipients will start receiving as early as this weekend, and with more receiving this coming week,’ the IRS said in a statement.
“In fact, the payments have already arrived for some people just one day after President Joe Biden signed the legislation into law.”

Going back to Kuderna’s writeup, he added this list of other ways that money will be spent:

$130 billion for K-12 Schools
$350 billion to state, local, and tribal governments
$20 billion [toward] vaccine development
New subsidies [toward] Obamacare
Increased child tax credit
$50 billion of direct aid to small business (2% of the bill)
Increased SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits by 15%
Any student loans forgiven from 2021-2025 to be considered a nontaxable event.

From there, he touches on the debt this stimulus bill and its predecessors have left us in, ending with this:

“The question remains, will a record-high stock market, small business solvency, and household finances grow accustomed to and become dependent on government stimulus? Time will tell.”

Time will tell indeed.

Extra Space Storage (EXR) priced and underwrote a public offering of 1.6 million common shares for gross proceeds of around $207.7 million, parts of which it intends to use toward funding potential acquisition opportunities and repaying amounts outstanding under its lines of credit.
Easterly Government (DEA) acquired three U.S. government-leased properties: 1) a 99,130 square-foot FBI field office building in Knoxville, Tennessee, 2) a 60,000 square-foot Attorney’s Office in Louisville, Kentucky, 3) a 17,420 square-foot ICE office in Louisville, Kentucky.
VICI Properties (VICI) saw Fitch affirm its BB long-term issuer default rating with an outlook upgrade from negative to stable.
