Foreign Evergrande Investors Might Get Gypped

Here’s the good news about Evergrande: It says it will start making payments on some of its debt.

Here’s the bad news about Evergrande for anyone outside of China: Beijing might just let it fail on debt obligations to foreign investors.

Alrighty then…

Here in the U.S., I’m really not trying to start “toilet paper-gate” all over again. But bulk grocery and goods chain Costco (COST) says it will start restricting certain purchases.

During the company’s Q4 earnings call the other day, CFO Richard Galanti said this:

We are putting some limitations on key items like bath tissues, roll towels, Kirkland Signature water, [and] high-demand cleaning-related skews related to the uptick in the delta-related demand.

Writing about it, Fox Business adds these summaries:

Costco’s current supply chain and inflationary pressures, which include port delays, higher labor and freight costs, and shortages on everything from shipping containers, trucks, and drivers to various components, raw materials, and ingredients, have caused most of its general items to sell out within two weeks.

Also:

Both Costco and its suppliers are paying two to six times more for containers and shipping, 4% to 8% more for pulp and paper goods, 5% to 11% more for plastic and resin products such as trash bags, cups, and plates, and 3% to 10% more for certain apparel products. In addition, Costco has seen single-digit price increases for aluminum foil and cans for soda and other beverages and mid to high single-digit price increases on fresh foods, with meat leading the way with high single to low double-digit price increases due to feed, labor, and transportation costs. Commodities like oil, coffee, and nuts are at five year-highs, according to Costco’s buyers.

And if Costco is dealing with all that, so are most other grocers in the U.S.

The World According to REITs

There’s once again lots to talk about in the direct real estate investment trust (REIT) world today. Their tenants aren’t the only ones making headlines.

For instance, Kilroy Realty (KRC), American Tower (AMT), and Invitation Homes (INVH) announced investment opportunities in the last 24 hours. The first two were through senior unsecured notes; the third was through a secondary offering.

Clearly then, that trend continues. So does Four Corners Property Trust’s (FCPT) acquisition streak.

That net-lease REIT purchased an Arby’s property in Ohio for $1.9 million with a 6.7% going-in cash capitalization rate. The corporate-operated tenant has about five years left to its contract.
Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (PEB) bought the 369-room Margaritaville Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida, for $270 million – in part with about $108.5 million of cash on hand.
UMH Properties (UMH) announced that its board of directors will be increasing from 11 members to 12 as Angela D. Pruitt joins the group.
