Avoiding Inflation With International “Friendships”

I’m once again doing my best to avoid inflation news today – which meant I had to look long and hard for suitable material.

(Warning: I didn’t quite achieve that goal, as you’ll see below.)

But both your sanity and mine mean something. So here’s what I found outside of which individuals, analysts, and companies are talking about how bad and how much worse prices will get…

For one thing, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon says fear has largely waned around the world. Attending Bloomberg’s New Economy Forum in Singapore, he made some noteworthy remarks.

Calling the global economy “complicated,” he added that:

I think markets generally, when I step back and I think about my 40-year career, there’s been periods of time when greed has far outpaced fear. We [are] in one of those periods of time. We [are] in one of those periods of time. And, generally speaking, my experience says that, you know, those periods are not long-lived.

How long-lived will this one be? As far as I’m aware, he didn’t say, only discussed how:

Something will rebalance it and bring a little bit more perspective. And given it feels like inflation is running above trend, chances are interest rates will move up and that will take some of the exuberance out of certain markets.

Let’s ignore that single I-word mention and work with the “global economy” bit instead…

There’s some dispute right now about current Chinese-American relations after President Xi Jinping called Biden “my old friend” on Monday. That prompted a follow-up question from a U.S. reporter aboard Air Force One, to which White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates replied:

I’m not going to speak for President Xi. But like you just mentioned, you’ve heard explicitly from the president himself that he has a longstanding relationship with President Xi. They’ve spent a great deal of time together. They are able to have candid discussions, be direct with each other, which helps them be productive. But he does not consider Xi an old friend.

That might be why the U.S. and Japan just announced a new trade partnership that emphasizes “third-country concerns” – a direct commentary on China. Then again, Bloomberg says China is accelerating “secretive” plans to eliminate any need for American technology.

So perhaps neither man truly understands the definition of “friendship.” Either that, or it means something very different in politics.

The World According to REITs

As my blog readers know, I’m committed to giving you individual real estate investment trust (REIT) updates. I’ll always share three (if not four) such movements here on this blog.

And Intelligent REIT Daily readers can expect an additional three in their email inbox whenever those are available (as is true this time around).

There seems to be a decent number of notes and public offering activity happening in this sector as of late. Then again, the same can be said for sales, acquisitions, and signed leases…

Indus Realty Trust (INDT) completed its purchase of a 197,000 square-foot industrial building in Charleston, South Carolina. The 57%-leased property cost $28.6 million and is the company’s first venture into that area.
Duke Realty (DRE) bought a 53,265 square-foot distribution facility in Pomona, California. Situated on 3.2 acres, it’s fully leased to Golden Grove Trading.
Gladstone Commercial (GOOD) signed a 10-year lease for its entire refrigerated industrial property in Reading, Pennsylvania. This ensures unbroken occupancy at the 42,900 square-foot facility.

As for the chart below, the bears were clearly in charge at Postal Realty Trust (PSTL). It seems that investors are still not happy about its earnings results a week and a half ago.

The stock hasn’t recovered from that $0.01 miss. Yet.
