A Dramatic Reality or Just Drama?

Happy continuing Independence Day weekend to everyone. I hope my fellow Americans are resting, relaxing, and enjoying this Monday off.

For those of you who don’t get to celebrate July 4th in that way, I hope your workday is extremely productive and positively engaging. In which case, that’s what I’m hoping for myself.

Because clearly I’m on the clock.

I told you on Friday that I’d be writing today, and so I am. The markets being mostly closed – and the Daily REITBeat being completely closed – this is going to be a truncated version of our normal blog post.

I do, however, want to address one of today’s headlines about the work from home (WFH) trend that went global last year. Many employers are more than ready to bring employees back into the office now. And they’re making it known.

This has sparked some positive employee responses and some negative ones. And leave it to the media to focus on the negative ones.

I’m not weighing in on which ones are right and which ones are wrong today. Only pointing out that the media has a vested financial interest in perpetuating drama.

The other day, Yahoo Finance quoted Lauren Pope, an Oracle employee who posted this on LinkedIn:

“I find it interesting (stupid) how WFH was considered a ‘vital necessity’ to keep companies afloat last year… But now that companies want people back in the office – fully remote work is being treated like a recruiting perk or bonus.”

The article says that opinion went viral, “gathering over [13,000] likes and hundreds of comments.” I’m pretty sure the word “viral” is being misapplied to something that gained under a million calculatable views…

But I do agree there’s something to talk about here regardless.

The World According to REITs

The article continues with:

“While some agree with her, others called her out.
“‘This is a really entitled perspective. You can believe you kept their business afloat, but they also kept your household afloat by keeping you employed during a time when many businesses screeched to a halt,’ wrote Natalie Austin, an EHR marketing manager at Remarkable Health.
‘If an organization prefers the collaboration that an in-office setting offers, they have a right to require employees to be at work when it’s ‘safe.’ If you don’t like it, find a different job,’ she added.

There are plenty more news stories out there about the blatant and subtle discomfort with leaving WFH behind. For instance, an April Newsweek article says that 82% of “CEOs want employees to return in person. Yet a mere 10% of “employees want to come back full-time, according to a study by the Best Practice Institute.”

But how many people were interviewed in that study? And in what states? And how many of them were perfectly fine coming in to work three days a week?

Also, how many are going to do more than sigh over not getting their preferred way in this?

My main real estate investment trust (REIT)-related point is this: Yes, our lives have changed drastically since 2019. And we’re going to be dealing with the aftermath of 2020 for a long time to come.

But don’t write off commercial real estate just yet.

In fact, don’t write them off at all. 2021 remains a far cry from being done with brick-and-mortar.

You can mark my words on that.
