“Companies Pull Out All the Stops to Fill Jobs in a Market ‘Like We Have Never Seen’…”

That Yahoo Finance headline caught my attention, as did its openings lines:

No skills? No degree? You’re hired.
The hiring logjam showed some signs of easing in July. But companies in the trenches trying to match labor demand and supply still see a market that continues to be imbalanced – and tilted heavily [toward] those looking for work.
“No matter what source you use right now, fundamentally, there [are] 40% more jobs open today than there [were] before the pandemic began,” ZipRecruiter CEO Ian Siegel told Yahoo Finance Live on Monday. “And that was already a white-hot job market.”
As of the end of June, a record 10.1 million jobs were available in the U.S. But as ZipRecruiter (ZIP) said in its second-quarter letter to shareholders, the labor market today is one of “disequilibrium.”

Siegel added, “This is a job seekers’ market like we have never seen.”

Yet it could get more chaotic in NYC considering its vaccine mandate, which begins today. (San Francisco and New Orleans will soon follow, I believe.) People now have to show vaccination proof to enter gyms, concerts, and restaurants.

Employees included. Those who aren’t are threatening to quit.

That kind of issue is no problem to billionaire Warren Buffett though. He’s confident, betting on which companies will survive anyway. Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A)(BRK-B) bought almost 11 million more shares of grocery store Kroger (KR) on Monday.

That takes it to 61.8 million shares in all.

People have to eat, so that makes sense. But here’s the interesting part…

Buffett’s banner company sold its entire position in biotech firm Biogen (BIIB) and reduced its stakes in drugmakers Abbvie (ABBV), Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY), and Merck (MRK).

Does Buffett know something we don’t know?

The answer is probably. I’d even accept a resounding “Duh!” in this case.

The man is one of the richest, most well-connected individuals this world has ever seen. For a deeper discussion of what that means, consider the April 13, 2011 Forbes article by Matt Schifrin: “Insider Trading Haunts Berkshire Hathaway.”

The opinion piece points to Buffett’s former employee David Sokol, who had to resign amid accusations of insider trading. While “it seems crystal clear” to Schifrin that the accusations were accurate, he asks:

“But why should anyone be surprised by this? In my view, Buffett and Berkshire have always been the ultimate insiders. Because of Warren’s status as a living investment legend, he has access to all kinds of information average Joe investors only read about weeks later in the financial papers.
“I assume that having ‘insider’ access is part of the culture at Berkshire, just as it is at big money hedge funds.”

That’s why, when Buffett makes a move, everyone wants to know about it. Because the move is based on the absolute best information available.

That’s not to say he’s correct 24-7. We saw last year just how wrong a Berkshire bet can be.

At the same time, to borrow from The Hunger Games, he doesn’t need well-wishes that “the odds be ever in [his] favor.”

They always are.

Knowing that, we’re automatically going to take note of his grocery store play as the real estate investment trust connoisseurs that we are. It further justifies our decision to hold certain grocery-store anchored shopping center REITs.

The World According to REITs

Now that we have all that detailed and discussed, here’s the REIT-specific updates you count on in these posts:

Innovative Industrial Properties (IIPR) purchased a property in Hancock, Maryland. It immediately signed on Harvest Health & Recreation as a tenant under the promise of improving the plot to tenant specification.
American Tower (AMT) released its 2020 sustainability report, including how it performed in achieving key sustainability goals.
Ashford Hospitality Trust (AHT) announced early-on July operating results, including how its comparable hotel net income was $7.9 million. Comparable hotel earnings before interest, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), meanwhile, was up 27% month-over-month to $26.4 million.

Can that last bit of news save AHT from falling yet again today?

I’m not sure why I keep bothering to ask…
