Here’s “news” that will surprise no one: “New Survey Finds That Majority of Parents Support School Re-Openings This Fall.”

So says a pretty pointless Yahoo Finance article. Truly no offense to the writer there. He was no doubt assigned the subject. Moreover, it wasn’t exactly a bad idea to report the information just to have it out there.

At the same time, I think a “no duh” isn’t entirely inappropriate. It’s been over a year now of juggling work responsibilities with “homeschool” responsibilities. And many a parent is intensely burnt out as a result.

Speaking of parent-child relationships, the “happiest place on earth” – and perhaps the most expensive too – is among several major companies that have updated their mask mandates. Disney (DIS) will no longer require its guests to cover their mouths and noses in outdoor areas.

Meanwhile, Costco (COST), Trader Joe’s, Publix and Walmart (WMT) have all said that fully vaccinated customers who have waited their obligatory two weeks can shop without masks on. And no, they’re not going to ask for proof, saying they’ll take people’s actions at “face value,” as it were.

Meanwhile, other big names like Target (TGT), CVS (CVS), Walgreens (WBA), and Macy’s (M) have released statements saying they’re reviewing the CDC’s latest announcements.

Life seems to be getting back to normal slowly but surely – including for the wedding industry, which was so very hard-hit last year. Fox Business reports a spike in both interest and bookings from Florida to Massachusetts to Texas.

Nor is it just social lives that are picking up. We’ve already seen several major mergers in the real estate investment trust (REIT) realm this year. And other companies are expanding their collective efforts as well.

Take AT&T’s(T) decision to spin off its media business and merge it with Discovery’s(DISCA) (DISCB) (DISCK). Bloomberg calls it “a tax-friendly deal” and “a surprise reversal for a company that spent $85 billion to acquire [those] assets less than three years ago.”

In similar news, Fox Business writes how, “The 7-Eleven convenience store chain said Friday it had completed a $21 billion acquisition of Marathon Petroleum Corp.’s [MPC] Speedway convenience stores amid disarray from U.S. antitrust enforcers who hadn’t agreed on what to do about a transaction they all said they believed was anticompetitive.”

That latter example might be overturned still, of course. However, even if it does, corporations’ growing desire to make things happen is pretty obvious.

The World According to REITs

There were only two REIT subsectors that ended in the green last week: prison (2.1%) and student housing (2.05%). Everything else experienced drops ranging from data center’s -0.03% to cannabis’ 7.3%.

Incidentally, the next-worst drop was from billboards at 3.96%. So nothing even close across the rest of the board.

As for the cannabis dip, that’s what can and almost always does happen when you’re investing in a high-flying stock. I stand by my investment recommendations, mind you, but I’ve also warned on this one that it could be a roller coaster ride to reach those proffered profits.

Essentially, don’t get swept away on promises alone when you consider a new stock. Know the negative possibilities as well as the positive ones before you invest.

That’s the whole purpose of me presenting news like the following from The Daily REITBeat:

W. P. Carey (WPC) made four recent investments totalling about 1.1 million square feet. That covered a $65 million sale-leaseback of a state-of-the-art food production facility, a $52 million acquisition of a research and development facility, a $27 million off-market purchase of a class A light manufacturing facility, and $26 million for a student housing property net leased to Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York.
Park Hotels & Resorts (PK) announced that four of its subsidiaries completed their $750 million offering of 4.875% senior secured notes due 2029. Parts of the proceeds will go toward repaying amounts outstanding from its revolver and term loan.
Terreno Realty (TRNO) is making a private placement of $100 million seven-year senior unsecured notes at a fixed interest rate of 2.41% and another $50 million 10-year unsecured notes at 2.84%. The resulting income will be used to continue its green building efforts.

So there’s your news for this Monday morning. Act wisely with it!
