This is going to be a short blog today considering how it’s a holiday, the markets are closed (as is The Daily REITBeat), and we all have some relaxing to do.

That is to say you all have some relaxing to do. I’ll still be getting at least some work done – hopefully quite a bit without going overboard.

But I did want to note something interesting a contact at Digital Third Coast marketing sent me earlier this week. According to a new report it’s promoting from Travis Credit Union, a survey of 2,052 Americans indicated that the do-it-yourself trend in investing isn’t anything to be overlooked.

As Digital Third Coast’s Odette Rivera Davis put it in her email to me, the researchers were trying to:

“… learn more about [people’s] feelings on the retail trading boom, their favorite apps, how they’ve funded their trading accounts, and their overall education level on investment strategy.”

They found that (also as included in her correspondence):

57% of respondents said they feel the retail trading boom is great. Only 10% find it problematic. 33% have no strong opinion either way.
80% of users say they feel empowered by no-fee trading apps.
57% of people using trading apps say they’ve started within the past year.
Favorite trading apps: 1. Robinhood, 2. E*Trade, 3. WeBull, 4. Fidelity, 5. TD Ameritrade, 6. Charles Schwab 7. SoFi.

She went on to point out how little some users are actually investing through these channels, with one in four committing less than $500 total. And 44% have ventured under $5,000.

That’s probably a good thing considering how little education most people have in the stock market. Starting out slow and testing the waters can be a great way to learn the ropes.

In which case, this last revelation is more than a little alarming – how one in four daily traders via these easy-come, easy-go apps admit to having little or no actual investment education.

When I say that’s “more than a little alarming,” I mean it’s exceptionally so. The stock market was made to make money off of, yes.

But you have no idea how much you can lose from it… until you actual do.

That’s why I’m not going to hesitate about stepping onto my soap box and tell you that – without a shadow of a doubt – you need to know what you’re doing. It’s imperative to understand the risks and rewards, the importance of diversification, and your own personal position and preferences.

Otherwise, you’re playing with fire instead of using it responsibly.

That’s one of my biggest goals in writing what I do and how I do it: to make sure my readers know what they’re doing BEFORE they do it.

That’s the way you not only make money… but you keep it too.
