There’s some definite drama today around the world’s stock market that you might notice as the trading day progresses. That is to say you might notice it unless you’re captivated by the fact that we’ve got eight March Madness games going on today.

Who will advance and who won’t? Sadly, we already know that Virginia Commonwealth University is out in a no-contest decision after several of its players tested for Covid.

Here’s what coach Mike Rhoades said about the intensely disappointing development:

“We’ve been tested every day for the past three weeks. But within the past 48 hours, we’ve received multiple positive tests. We are devastated for our players and coaches. It has been a dream for all of us to play in the NCAA Tournament. We appreciate the care of our doctors and administration this year. And all our efforts and attention will be put into our players at this time. Life isn’t always fair, but it’s about how you deal with it and move forward.”

That’s a really great statement on a really rough decision we can all benefit from. To it, I would just add the trite but true commentary that you never know what’s around the next corner.

For instance, Fox Business published an article over the weekend touting how, “Spring break crowds have brough a much-needed boost to the hopes of business owners across the country after more than a year of struggle and hardship under coronavirus lockdowns and restrictions.”

It specifically mentioned a pizzeria owner in Hot Springs, Arkansas, who said just two weeks ago, he “didn’t want to do this anymore.” Now, however, he’s realized his “personality was in the restaurant” and he’s right back to firing up the oven.

So what’s the drama then?

That would be over in Europe, where the AstraZeneca (AZN) vaccine has been put on pause by more than a dozen countries because of fears it causes potentially fatal blood clots.

So perhaps it’s a good thing the company told the European Union it was going to fall far short of the original 270 million doses it promised for the first half of the year – down to more like 100 million.

Meanwhile, many Asian stocks were mixed when I last checked after Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan suddenly replaced his country’s hawkish central bank governor with someone who’s much more critical of high interest rates. That sent the currency tumbling intensely, with investors outside the country wondering how far the shockwaves will reach.

Even so, I’m going to end this Monday morning post on a positive note by quoting Yahoo Finance:

“As many fear the mass exodus of U.S. residents in urban areas like New York City, Shake Shack (SHAK) is planning to break ground on a new location as part of the CEO’s belief in an ‘urban Renaissance.’…
“‘We believe urban restaurants and centers are going to come back and come back really strong,’ Shake Shack CEO Randy Garutti told Yahoo Finance in an interview.”

Now, before you take all the money you had in the Turkish lira and throw it into New York City property potential… keep in mind that Garutti admits the recovery will probably “take some time.”

With that said, it is a positive sign we’re well beyond the worst of the shutdown era.

And one last note…

My son won $75,000 last night while playing virtual slots. He showed me his winnings in bitcoin, and both of us are in absolute disbelief.

Since it really did seem to happen though, I plan to write an article on that very topic in an effort to teach him a thing or two about investing. It’s probably something we can all use right about now.

The World According to Commercial Real Estate

The market certainly has a way of showing which stocks it loves and which it hates in any given moment. There’s no bones about either in last week’s summary of REIT winners and losers.

SL Green (SLG) announced its first portfolio-wide Covid testing site initiative, where it’s identified at least 21 locations in New York City it can free up for that purpose, free of charge.
CyrusOne (CONE)announced that its Carrollton data center in Carrollton, Texas – the largest data center in the U.S. – is now net-positive in regard to its water usage, its second such accomplishment.
Mack-Cali Realty (CLI) will continue suspending its common-share dividend for the rest of the year “to conserve capital and allow for greater financial flexibility during this period of heightened economic uncertainty and based on the company’s projected 2021 taxable income estimates.”

Clearly then, it’s not CLI’s day. And it won’t be for a while.
